I usually don't comment because it doesn't make a difference. but I think it is cute how he was talking about pride and how bad it is for science while you here him mentioning israel multiple times. "I went to Israel" "my mom migrated to Israel" I am pretty sure that he knows the history of israel and what israel is doing 24/7 and he knows israel is so proud with all the crimes that is doing so why do you associate yourself with it? Or when he say I was in a farm in israel. Do you know that it is a stolen land from the original people? Where is your pride here why don't you check it out or just virtue signaling to sell your books

The meaning of life is to transition into inteligent/sentient life, that if it passes the great barrier, to gather more and more knowledge to the point were it becomes an inorganic inteligent being that can still thrive after the carbon atoms fades away in the far far future. Life's meaning is to have inteligence rise from it and hopefully maintain it. But what do I know, just a random dude that thinks about stupid stuff lol....

Science proponents seem to all have that idea that because we're smaller than the universe, it means we're insignificant. We're immense compared to atoms but science proponents dont tell us we should feel super significant. Tens of billions of species have existed on earth since the first living organism, but it's the species with the greatest cognitive capacity, "intelligence," that tends to destroying itself and the world. I dont understand how both these ideas inhabit the same intelligent person. - The human race is so unspecial "not that interesting" and hence not worth a visit by aliens. - We should do everything in our power to send a few people to space to become a multi-planetry species, should the rest of humanity face an extinction event, thereby saving humanity. The same uninteresting species so worth saving and preserving, and yet so Monday they're not worth a visit or close observation.

If we never died and could live long enough to study an alien cultures entire development do you think there would be people who would do it? I don't know about you but personally I would find observing a developing culture to be absolutely fascinating from the outside. I can think of many other examples of why Aliens would be interested in this planet but this one I think shows best why they would be here. I am not saying they are just that there are a bunch of reasons why they could be, for science on the development of a particular species.

Oumuamua has never had a real picture taken more than one pixel. The brightness of this pixel varies in very strange ways. Loeb makes arguments that it's not a rock, it's too unnatural, and might be an alien object like a thin light sail, yet at 16:25 the video editor opened the discussion with an artist's rendition showing a rock. Maybe if that artist's rendition never achieved widespread distribution, people wouldn't be so closed minded to Loeb's idea.
Pred 5 dneviAnt Tam
It is refreshing to listen to someone like Avi Loeb talk about the close mindedness of mainstream scientific community, but he is still a mainstream science academic. The UFO phenomenon is stranger, much, much stranger, than what he paints it to be. There are already crystal clear pictures and video of these things, and yet folks don’t take them seriously because the same technology that allows this clarity of image also gives you the tools to fake it. There are thousands of crystal clear fakes, mixed the the genuine ones, so what gives? Stop asking for video/picture proof, because that just wont convince anybody, and get into the raw data. Without saying it, he just dismissed the hundreds of reliable eye witness accounts from military and civilian air industries. So much for a self described martir who is willing to die on the fence for a more open minded mainstream I also disagree with his insistence of our lack of importance. Yes, we are not important in the universal scale, but we sure are an existential crisis on this planet. That aught to amount to something. Why would anyone want to study us? For the same reason why thousands of entomologists have studied ants, the very insects he compares us to. There are entire encyclopedias written about the millions of ant species on the planet, their behavior and importance in maintaining of global ecosystems. People get phDs to become authorities on the smell glands of ants or their sociology. So mr Loeb may probably want to take seriously his humility cool aid and figure out that hey, maybe some phDs from Proxima Centauri might be interested in us after all. Jacques Vallee would be a nice addition to Lex’s rooster of guests on this subject.

Around the 1:16:00 mark, the question of photographic quality of images that record a UFO event comes into play. Being that most of the images come from smartphones .... ! However great the technology that is inside the smartphone is, it is being used and operated by someone that is NOT !! And that results in poor image quality !! One of the major problems is " AUTOFOCUS " !! No matter how many megapixels you have, the image quality will be poor at best. You can not autofocus on a very small object, even at maximum magnification ! And the use of high magnification can make matters worse, by introducing " Camera Shake " !! So... with those two factors, you are assured to have a very poor quality image or video !!! There's a reason why professional's ie; movie makers use tripods and have a second person to operate the focus mechanism of the camera ! During the credits shown at the end of movies, you will normally see somebody with the title of Focus Puller ! Just my $ 0.02 !

Besides Lex Fridman's excellent channel, John Michael Godier channel Event Horizon, which l have commented extensively on in previous posts, is one l'd encourage anyone with a serious interest in ETI-related issues to subscribe to, alongside Prof. David Kipping's (Dept. of Astronomy, Columbia U) Cool Worlds channel, working in tandem with Event Horizon. By now, Dr. Avi Loeb's (Prof. of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Harvard U.) arguments seriously entertaining the alternative hypothesis that 'Oumuamua's nature and origins are of ETI are well known, given their recent coverage. In this recent interview, he articulates his major premises thereon, which l believe require some (charitable) qualifications and critical (though not skeptical) scrutiny: 1.) His first major premise is largely polemical, and examined from the anthropological, historical, and social epistemology lens of the work of Thomas Kuhn, Imre Lakatos, Larry Laudan, Helen Longino, Bruno Latour, he critiques the values internal to scientific research programmes (Lakatos, Laudan) that reinforce the methodologically conservative character of normal science (Kuhn), which to borrow from one of Kuhn's many analogies of his "paradigm" or disciplinary matrix, have a "searchlight" characteristic which narrowly illuminate problems appropriate to normal science's "puzzle solving" while remaining blind to the surrounding background of anomalies--i.e., problems that cannot be domesticated by normal sciences paradigms. This "belt of auxiliary hypotheses" warding off the onslaught of anomalies (Lakatos) is further reinforced by institutional norms of credentialing and certification (Latour, Laudan) which undermine the basis of transformational criticism (Longino) which examines the very RELEVANCE for relating certain kinds of evidence E to support a given hypothesis H. In this case, for example, Loeb (a' la Longino) criticizes his colleagues for cherry-picking and massaging evidence E to support their null hypothesis ('Omuamua cannot be of ETI origins) whilst remaining blind to other anomalous evidence E' that would support his alternative hypothesis H' (viz., that 'Omuamua is of ETI origins.) 2) ln short, his polemics is an instance of the general problem of how socially coordinated institutional practices like in the case of natural sciences walk that fine line between producing on the one hand theories which can deliver reliable predictions and persuasive explanations (always a matter of degree and defeasability), and on the other hand remain open to novelty, creativity and an ever-increasing scope of explanatory coherence. In short, it is the creative tension between the critical hypothetico-deductive process of hypothesis confirmation, versus the inductive or abductive process of hypothesis generation. 3) ln Old Testament "prophets versus priests" fashion, Loeb wags a finger in frustration against the "priests" of normal science whom he argues, in their retrenched and defensive stance in support of the critical stage of theory confirmation, do so at the expense of the necessary stage of hypothesis generation and creatively abductive reasoning--what should come first temporally but most importantly axiologically (you gotta have bona fide data which includes on a metalevel the buffet table of a variety of hypotheses): The methodological norms of this dialectical process can be at cross-purposes, the "priests" of normal science, incentivized by their methodological conservativism and careerism, may not see an anomaly even if it bites them in the ass. It takes a "prophet" of the likes of Loeb, to show the emperor has no clothes, and confronts the novice and expert alike to view the data with fresh eyes or at least broaden Kuhn's searchlight's scope. 4.) This is an old story well documented by historians and philosophers of science, and though in spirit l support Loeb's narrative, in the letter l qualify his claim as running afoul of a false dilemma. Contra Loeb, appeals to authority ARE logically and epistemically relevant, insofar as expertise enables legitimate authorities to appraise the evidence and data in appropriately methodologically systematic fashions, and draw the appropriate inferences. This does NOT suggest that scientists are in a "special class": Certainly, for example, the field of contemporary astronomy relies indispensably on the contributions of amateur enthusiasts for a host of reasons. But it's simply untrue and misleading for Loeb to dismiss appeals to authority (suitably qualified): This is exactly why for example courts of law hire expert witnesses. Or to put it another way, Loeb's premises are predicated on a fallacy of equivocation: he is confusing inductive appeals to authority with fallacies of illicit authority. Logic 101. A Harvard distinguished scientist of the likes of Loeb should know better. 5.) I'm not merely trying to quibble or introduce red herrings--As I said I support Loeb's arguments in spirit but I take issue with the letter of some of his polemicizing. To add to that, I find it a bit curious that in the same breath he dismisses the data of UFO research. Granted, the quality of such evidence may leave something to be desired--there is a preponderance of evidence of UAPs/UFOs but a lack of clear and compelling cases bespeaking of ETI technology beyond a reasonable doubt. But rather than hide behind weak analogies and blanket statements like "we're not so special, we're just in a typical neighborhood" I would think, by the lights of Loeb's very own claims for his ETI alternative hypothesis for the celestial phenomenona of 'Omuamua, he'd extend it also to terrestrial phenomena of UAPs, UFOs. If nothing else, but for the sake of consistency? I would think with his gadfly stance against his "mainstream" opponents, he would at the very least endorse Prof. Alexander Wendt's arguments for "why we need a serious science of UFOs."
